A mindset for seeing possibilities others overlook.
Every meaningful transformation begins the same way—not with an answer, but with a question.
Throughout my career, I’ve learned that organizations rarely struggle because they lack talented people or good intentions. More often, they’re constrained by assumptions: the belief that “this is how it’s always been done,” that yesterday’s success will guarantee tomorrow’s, or that the safest path is the one everyone else is already following.
Black Sky Thinking is my response to that.
It is a mindset built on curiosity, humility, and the belief that better questions lead to better outcomes. It challenges conventional thinking, encourages leaders to seek understanding before solutions, and looks beyond the obvious to discover opportunities others may not see.
The name reflects a simple idea. We often focus on the horizon directly in front of us—what is visible, familiar, and expected. Black Sky Thinking asks us to look beyond that horizon, into the unknown, where uncertainty and possibility exist together. While the future can never be predicted with certainty, it can be explored with intention.
For me, this isn’t simply a business philosophy. It’s how I approach leadership, innovation, customer experience, and life itself.
The Principles
Black Sky Thinking is grounded in a handful of beliefs that consistently shape how I work and how I lead.
Seek understanding before solutions.
The first answer is rarely the best answer.
The best leaders spend more time understanding the problem than rushing toward a solution. They listen to customers, employees, partners, and communities. They separate evidence from ego and curiosity from certainty.
Challenge assumptions.
Many limitations are inherited rather than real.
Progress often begins by questioning the beliefs that everyone else has accepted without examination. Sometimes the biggest breakthrough comes from asking, “Why not?” instead of “Why?”
Connect what others keep separate.
Growth rarely comes from improving one function in isolation.
Brand, customer experience, technology, culture, operations, innovation, and leadership are interconnected systems. Lasting transformation happens when those systems begin working together instead of independently.
Pursue purposeful innovation.
Innovation should never exist simply because something new is possible.
The best innovations solve meaningful problems, improve people’s lives, strengthen organizations, and create lasting value for customers, employees, and communities.
Think beyond today’s decisions.
Every decision creates ripple effects.
Black Sky Thinking encourages leaders to think several moves ahead—not only about quarterly performance, but about the long-term impact on people, culture, trust, and opportunity.
Where Black Sky Thinking Applies
While the examples throughout this site often come from marketing, customer experience, AI, and organizational transformation, the mindset itself is much broader.
It applies to leadership.
To business strategy.
To technology.
To career decisions.
To building organizations people want to work for.
Even to exploration beyond the workplace, where some of life’s best lessons come from stepping into unfamiliar environments and seeing the world from a different perspective.
An Invitation
This website isn’t intended to provide definitive answers.
Instead, I hope it encourages better conversations.
If these ideas challenge an assumption, spark a new question, or help you see a problem from a different perspective, then they’ve done exactly what Black Sky Thinking is meant to do.
Because meaningful transformation doesn’t begin with certainty.
It begins with the courage to imagine what might be possible.
